When you’ve had too much to drink and the night is nearing its end, smiles can mean too many things, my friend. You throw the car in reverse with a thud. There’s no right way to say had your way, forced your hand right away. You don’t need a reason to stop in the parking lot of a disused dollar store. It’s all I’ve got and you want more. Taken twice for the first round. It’s an easy way to remember my name. It will be over soon, and you’ll be drunk by noon. Oh needles on the back of your neck. This is the first time you’ve asked for something that you can’t have. People who we both respect gave us a roadmap for this kind of wanting. “And so…” you said in a whisper, but no other words followed. It’s easy to see why you are you and I am me. There were words in the air last night to be plucked and given meaning. It’s only fair that you should tear them from me. Oh needles on the back of your neck. This is the first time you’ve asked for something that you can’t have. People who we both respect gave us a roadmap for this kind of wanting. Oh keeping quiet to ourselves would have worked for us very well sometime last night. Even when it’s clear to you I could use a little explanation. It’s all almost over now. Hold your breath. Confirm with your own two eyes. It’s worse for you than smoking now. You try to speak, but you’ve forgotten every word again. Left to chance, what you could give tonight and what you’ve taken from both of us. This might enhance your will to live tonight or this could kill it with sweating hands. Your voice tells me you don’t have a reason. Why can’t we shake hands and call it even, try it again tomorrow night?

I can keep myself awake endlessly watching every move in infinite detail so easily. Some things sputter at the start for you and me. Some things cover every word as far as the eye can see. I can tell you mean what you say. Do you know how? Some get swept in a plan so easily. Some hearts are begging to be broken like you and me. People all around us are disengaging, disappearing. So glad that they found us. We’re disengaging, disappearing.

Cleared out your apartment, left your letter of resignation taped to the refrigerator. You always knew that it would come to this conclusion. Well, we all always knew. And now what do you do? Your time is worth less than ever before. And now, where will you go? Riding the bus to the edge of the city and back. Oh, how will we know when it’s time to share the facts that we have. You know that there are some things that we haven’t told you now. You should pause and let the words sink in. You want to haunt his home. You want the way back home. And now what do you do? Your time is worth less than ever before. And now, where will you go? Riding the bus to the edge of the city and back. You drift from couch to couch just like a ghost. Some might call it treason. You just call it spite. Sometimes there’s a reason. You’re just fall behind. But you know I called it the first time.

You slept like a cat: arms out on your side. You have no use for dreams. And when you awoke, the hands of the clock pointed straight at you. And you don’t blink. The words you heard were exactly the same words that I remembered. And if you told anyone else, they would say that you were tired and need a break from it all. The world is full of creepy guys, and you might be one, you know. But knowing that doesn’t help, like all the other things you know that don’t help. Maybe you have come to the wrong guy for advice. Can’t you tell?
